SACRAMENTO – Assemblywoman Young Kim (R-Fullerton) Assembly Concurrent Resolution 3, which recognizes January 13, 2015 as “Korean American Day” to honor the history, contributions and sacrifices of California’s Korean Americans, unanimously passed the Assembly Floor today. The resolution, which is co-authored by 69 members of the Assembly, continues a long tradition of the Legislature applauding the contributions of California’s many ethnic groups that comprise our state’s rich diversity.

“As a Korean American, I am proud of our heritage and the strong values of family, faith, and hard work that have been handed to us by previous generations,” said Kim. “It is my honor to ensure that the State Assembly recognizes Korean American Day, where we can honor the past, celebrate the present, and dream of a better future for all.”

This year marks the 112th year of Korean immigration to the U.S. On January 13, 1903, the first group of Koreans arrived in Honolulu, Hawaii. Over the last 112 years, Korean Americans have made significant contributions in all aspects of American life and have excelled in all fields. They continue to play a pivotal role in defining America as the land of diversity and opportunity.

Kim also presented a resolution to the board members and officers of the Korean American Foundation: Mr. Sung Woong Kim, National President of Korean American Foundation, USA; Dr. Sang Won Park, the former National President of Korean American Foundation, USA; Mr. Paul Cho, President of Korean American Foundation, Sacramento; Rev. Seung Won Yoon, Senior Advisor of Korean American Foundation, USA; Rev. Kyu Sik Song, President of Korean American Foundation, Irvine; and Rev. Ki Hong Han, President of Council on Korean Churches, USA.

Immediately before session, Kim hosted a prayer breakfast in the state Capitol. Pastors of the Council of Korean Churches of Orange County, religious leaders, and other members of the community were in attendance. Kim was also joined at the prayer breakfast by her colleagues in the Assembly Asm. Katcho Achadjian, Asm. Ling Ling Chang, Asm. Rocky Chavez, Asm. David Chin, Asm. David Chiu, Asm. Brian Dahle, Asm. Tom Daly, Asm. Beth Gaines, Asm. James Gallagher, Asm. Shannon Grove, Asm. David Hadley, Asm. Tom Lackey, Asm. Evan Low, Asm. Devon Mathis, Asm. Melissa Melendez, Asm. Jim Patterson, and Asm. Don Wagner.

Kim is the first Korean American Republican woman to be elected to the State Assembly and the first Asian American to represent the 65th District in Sacramento, which includes the communities of Buena Park, Cypress, Fullerton, La Palma, Stanton and W.
